FEBRUARY 17,
2004 - “Drudge is not a reporter, a journalist or a newsgatherer.
He is, as he himself admits, simply a purveyor of gossip. See
Complaint, Exs. 6, 8. His argument that he should benefit from the
"news gathering exception" to subsection (a)(4) of the long-arm
statute merits no serious consideration.”
This is not
speculation or commentary from any political type. This is the
legal opinion of a judge who presided over a defamation suit in
which Drudge was involved a few years ago. (SIDNEY BLUMENTHAL
and JACQUELINE JORDAN BLUMENTHAL, Plaintiffs, v. MATT DRUDGE and
AMERICA ONLINE, INC., Defendants., Civil Action No. 97-1968 (PFL),
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, 992 F.
Supp. 44; 1998 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 5606; 26 Media L. Rep. 1717; 12
Comm. Reg. (P & F) 367, April 22, 1998, Decided, April 22, 1998,
Filed)
The suit was
filed because on August 10, 1997, Drudge ran the following hateful
smear against Blumenthal, who had just been given a political
appointment by then-President Clinton:
“The DRUDGE
REPORT has learned that top GOP operatives who feel there is a
double-standard of only reporting republican shame believe they are
holding an ace card: New White House recruit Sidney Blumenthal has a
spousal abuse past that has been effectively covered up.
“The accusations
are explosive.” That lead in look familiar? The exact type he
used when issuing his recent dishonest smears against General Wesley
Clark or his current claims against Senator John Kerry? Drudge
continued: “There are court records of Blumenthal's violence against
his wife, one influential republican, who demanded [**2] anonymity,
tells the DRUDGE REPORT…
Wow, court
records, huh? It must have been easy for Drudge to defend
himself then, huh? Certainly he didn’t back down, since there
were “court records” to support his smearing claim, right?
Well, actually,
Drudge had to retract the story and, according to a report by the
Washington Post, apologize. As the legal proceedings report:
“After receiving
a letter from plaintiffs' counsel on Monday, August 11, 1997,
Complaint, Ex. 6, defendant Drudge retracted the story through a
special edition of the Drudge Report posted on his web site and
e-mailed to his subscribers. Drudge Decl. I PP 17-19. At
approximately 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 12, 1997, Drudge e-mailed
the retraction to AOL which posted it on the AOL service. Drudge
Decl. I P 19; AOL Mem. at l2. n5 Defendant Drudge later publicly
apologized to the Blumenthals. Drudge Decl. I P 20; Complaint, Ex. 6
(Howard Kurz (sic), Blumenthals Get Apology, Plan Lawsuit: Web Site
Retracts Story on Clinton Aide, Washington Post, August 11, 1997, at
A 11).”
Matt Drudge was a
poorly educated nobody who worked at places like 7/11. His big
break came when he was managing a gift shop, which happened to be on
the CBS studio lot. He would hear some inside scoops about
celebrities, and so figured he could make himself seem useful by
leeching off of scraps of information about those people people
actually cared about.
But like Rupert
Murdoch, Drudge realized that if you firmly and constantly kiss
right-wing butt, the extremely wealthy and completely amoral
Bush/Limbaugh-right will push you ahead with their massive media
machine and give you lots of money to continue propagating your
smears and flat out lies.
And so Drudge was
born. He, by most accounts, was about the first to break the
Lewinsky story, his big claim to fame. And ever since, he has
lived as an indentured servant, completely bound to keep lying and
smearing as the right wants him to lest he lose his ability to
survive purely as a hate-spewing leech – because he has no actual
abilities or education which would afford him to be successful in
any decent career.
Top-rated West
Coast radio host Tom Lycus a few months back talked about Rush
Limbaugh’s drug addiction.
“This is a brutal
business. It is full of people who hate themselves and their
lives.”
Matt Drudge has
to wake up each morning realizing his entire existence is dependent
on his continued hate-spewing, lying, distorting, and smearing for
the sake of tearing apart and ruining the lives of men and women who
may be good people. For example, this poor woman who Drudge
accused of having an affair with Kerry - she is in Africa with her
fiancé, Drudge has made her life a living hell as the media has been
camped out outside her fiancé’s family’s house for days now and
following them wherever they go.
How proud you
must be, Matt.
And if there is
no affair, look what he has done to John Kerry – a man who fought
and took bullets in defense of his country, who, for over 20 years
has actively worked to better his nation.
Look at what he
did to General Wesley Clark (see article:
Right-Wing Launches Dishonest Smear Attack on Clark), by all
accounts a good man who dedicated over three decades in service to
America. And Drudge has to sit there and spread provable lies
about this great American lest he no longer have any way to make
money. His is the lowest of scum, and he is trapped in being
so, as an affront to all that is decent and good about America.
He attacks true
patriots purely for political ends, even though he can likely barely
spell ‘patriot’ and probably thinks ‘political ends’ means Ann
Coulter bending over.
On top of this
all he is butt, butt ugly. Usually when people are so butt
ugly they develop some sort of charm to offset it, but Matt made the
decision to compliment his butt-faced ugliness with a personality to
match, maybe hoping to be so ugly in how he acts that his flat out
grotesqueness in appearance might seem not so bad in comparison.
It is hard to
understand how such an ugly, unintelligent, uneducated man as Drudge
can wake up each day knowing he has to serve yet another day
attacking good, decent people with hate and dishonest smears because
he is but a desperate, completely dependent groveling slave of the
right-wing hate-and-attack-America machine.
Rush had to
physically destroy himself, losing even his hearing on top of his
soul, and still he has a potential legal mess and potential jail
time, if convicted of doctor shopping, ahead of him. How much
will Drudge have to destroy of himself to continue his
self-deprecating, own-country destroying daily assault on truth,
decency, and basic American values?
