JOHN S. ASHTON TOUCHES THE THIRD RAIL:  Someone's Got To Say It:  Osama bin Laden Has Defeated George Bush in The War on Terror

September 20, 2008   19 men.  6 box cutters.

Seven years later, the once mightiest nation in the world is in complete collapse; yet bin Laden's al Qaeda is still alive and taking out hotels and embassies from Yemen to Pakistan; American soldiers are still dying in Iraq, 7 just a few days back, 2 couple before that, in fact, two on the very day John McCain gave his convention speech - death of American soldiers has become so common McCain didn't even mention the deaths in his speech or take a moment to pause.

He was centrally involved in bringing down the former Soviet Union.  And now, he has been central to bringing down America.  He attacked the World Trade Center, symbolically indicating that, not having an army to fight America, that his goal was to destroy America's financially.  I don't know if even bin Laden dreamed he would be so successful.  Like the towers went from gruesome blaze to awe-inspiring, horrific collapse, so has the American economy.

Without bin Laden, George W. Bush would never have been a two term President.  On September 10th, George Bush's aproval ratings were in what is called "the danger zone for an incumbent," hovering at 50 percent and headed downward.  Look at this graph that contains his approval ratings (from http://www.hist.umn.edu/~ruggles/Approval.htm )

You can see clearly, if it wasn't for 9/11, and then his use of 9/11 to invade Iraq, George Bush was, from his first year of office, careening from 50 percent downwards.  He would have never likely gotten a second term.

But he did, barely.  That temporary bump right at election time in 2004.  Just enough temporary insanity created by election pitches to get him back into office.  Never Forget Fallujah - it was the battle that brought America down.

And so, Osama's work got to be completed.  The trashing of the economy we are seeing play out is only one way Osama bin Laden, through George Bush, defeated America.  Bin Laden managed to get our Constitution discarded.  He managed to eliminate our right to privacy, throw out our right to due process.  He managed to get thousands of our soldiers killed, and tens of thousands of his Middle Eastern enemies, the Iraqi people.

In short, he has left America broke and battered, a merely shell of the once rich and powerful nation it was; and a shell of the democracy it once espoused.

He's still having fun, still blowing up stuff and killing people.

America is desperately trying to figure if it can figure a way to survive at all.

Maybe John McCain will get to use his existence to get into the White House, claiming America needs a "strong Republican" because they are better for "foreign policy."

Right John.  Osama certainly thinks so.

It is time to give credit where it is due.  With the mightiest military in the history of mankind, we have been unable to defeat an unarmed sandbox for five plus years.  With a few men, a few box cutters, and something called a smart leader, bin Laden has now been a central part to taking out the two mightiest empires the world has ever known.
