– After
some years of seeing it, we know how George W. Bush reacts to a
crisis. He pops out some big plan that he insists must be
passed immediately and without question, a plan that doesn't address
the actual problem, and which hands his friends lots of cash.
Now, we have John McCain's pattern of
reaction to crisis.
The first time he thought he was up
against the wall - after the Democratic convention had Obama soaring
in the polls - we got McCain's chaos-causing Hail Mary pick of Sarah
Palin. The world went, "Are you serious?" And he
reckoned himself a genius as he successfully blew apart what had
been a basic campaign discussion about issues.
Still, people were asking, "Is he
insane?"
Flash forward. Now weeks later.
McCain wakes up again seeing his back against the wall. And
so, enter operation McChaos once again. At first it seemed he
was merely ham-handed, trying to look leader-like and buddy up to
Obama so as to reduce his advantage in the crisis.
It also appeared that maybe he was
coming up with a lame excuse to dodge the debate on Friday night
because, though it had a scheduled topic of Foreign Affairs, it
obviously would be brought around to the economic crisis, and McCain
had not rehearsed whatever explanations he would need to justify his
past record and sell that he was now completely different. It
was only two weeks ago he said the economy was "fundamentally
sound." He needs more time, more preparation - all he
rehearsed this week was talk about "The Surge."
But it turns out it's even more
ridiculous than that. John McCain's camp, as
reported by ABC, is actually asking not just to delay the
Presidential debate, but to bump the VP debate - his excuse being,
hey, we can just have the debate meant for this Friday then.
And when would Palin then go public against questions and Biden?
Um, we'll figure that out later, said his camp.
This must mean that she is really as bad
as she seems. She has been embarrassing in even the few
interviews she did, and this week he wouldn't let her speak a single
word to the press while meeting with leaders at the UN. Not
one. She almost answered one question accidentally but caught
herself.
Now we know it is even worse. For
McCain to go to this length to get her debate bumped or maybe even
cancelled, it must be really, really ugly.
So today's picture now comes together.
McCain was sitting there being told he was in bad shape, knowing the
debate would become about the economy and that he wasn't prepared,
and, after seeing Palin unable to even answer a single question at
the UN this week, knowing he was just one week away from total
humiliation.
So, he freaked out, again. And
true to the form we now know is his crisis response, created chaos.
He creates this chaos thinking it will distract attention from him
and his failings. That's what the Palin pick was. But
like with the Palin pick, the chaos, while distracting the public,
also really unsettles them - has them going, "This is crazy," - and,
like with Palin, once the dust settles, they see it was really as
bonehead as it seemed.
McCain's whole game of being a
"Maverick" is just his tactic to try and shift attention. And
that makes sense, as he first came up with it during the last big
financial meltdown, the Savings and Loan Scandal, when he was one of
the Keating Five that allegedly got favors for one of the worst
perpetrators of the scam that cost America more than $180 billion.
He suddenly proclaimed himself a Maverick out to get at the center
of the dirt - the dirt he was at the center of.
And it fits with the
profile of McCain M/I did, showing him to be a man who likes
chaos for the fun of it.
This is what America will get if McCain
is President. Chaos, and true craziness. Glad we are
seeing it now rather than later. But still, it's so unsettling
as to actually be disturbing. This is a sick man.
Except, as with Palin's pick, John
didn't account for how transparent and stupid he would end up
looking.
